Syncrude oil sands mine

Syncrude noted the mine would be near its processing and upgrading facility, located about 40 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. If granted regulatory approval the mine would be operational by 2023 or 2024 and would allow Syncrude to maintain an existing 2,000 jobs and create about 1,160 construction jobs. Syncrude is a joint venture established to recover shallow deposits of oil sands using open-pit mining methods to extract bitumen and upgrade it to produce a high-quality, light (32 degree API), sweet, synthetic crude oil. Syncrude leases cover about 63,000 net acres.
